Internal combustion outboard motors are exceptionally polluting, beyond their carbon footprint. Compared to cars, they are far less efficient and, lacking catalytic converters, emit significantly higher amounts of carbon monoxide, NOx, hydrocarbons, and particulates (P10 and P6). Electric outboard motors emit no emissions during operation.
Exhaust discharges, fuel spills, and lubricants contribute to water pollution. Internal combustion outboard motors release various compounds into the water: benzene, toluene, MTBE, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, among others. Momentum’s water-lubricated and passively cooled system is fully sealed and releases no pollutants into the water.
